Your first pickleball tournament in Melbourne

Find a doubles event with round robin or pool play on the Victorian tournament calendar, check whether you need a DUPR account or Pickleball Australia membership, sort those out early, lock in a partner, and read the organiser's registration page before you pay.

Browse the Melbourne and all Victorian calendars to pick an event. Do that prep and your first tournament will be far more fun than nerve-racking. Here's how each step works for players in Melbourne and around Victoria.

Finding an event

Dinkcredible is a calendar of pickleball tournaments in Victoria. We list events and link you through to the organiser. We don't take entries or payments, so registration always happens on the organiser's own page.

Start with one of two hubs:

  • Melbourne events: tournaments in and around metro Melbourne. Handy for a first event when you'd rather sleep in your own bed and keep travel simple.
  • All Victorian events: the full state calendar, including regional events. A weekend away for a regional tournament can make a first event feel like a small trip, and it's a good way to meet players from other clubs.

Reading a listing

Each listing has labels to help you narrow things down at a glance:

  • Format and divisions: doubles, mixed, singles, and how play is structured.
  • DUPR rated: results from the event may be submitted to DUPR and count towards your rating.
  • DUPR gated: entry to some or all divisions is limited to players within a set DUPR range. See DUPR gating at Victorian pickleball tournaments.
  • Independent or Sanctioned: whether the event runs under Pickleball Australia's sanctioning program (more below).
  • Registration status: open, closed or waitlist.
  • From $X per player: the starting entry price as listed.
  • Verified date: when we last checked the listing details.
  • PlayByPoint: the event uses PlayByPoint for player registration (registration and payment still happen there — not on Dinkcredible).

Details can change after we list an event. Use the listing as your starting point and the organiser's page as the final word on dates, fees, divisions and rules.

Choosing a format

Most players do their first tournament in doubles. You share the court and the pressure with someone else, and the pace feels closer to the social sessions you already play. Singles covers much more ground and suits players who are confident with their movement and fitness.

The structure of an event matters too:

  • Round robin or pool play: you're placed in a group and play several teams. Lose your first match and you keep playing, which gives you time to settle in and a full day of pickleball for your entry.
  • Single elimination: one loss and you're out, which can make for a short day.
  • Double elimination: a second chance through a back draw.

Many events use pool play followed by finals or medal rounds. For a first tournament, a format with several guaranteed matches is usually the gentler choice. The listing and the organiser's page will say which format each division uses.

DUPR and Pickleball Australia membership

Two accounts come up a lot when you start entering tournaments in Victoria. Which ones you need depends on the event, so check the registration page. Here's what each means.

DUPR

DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) is a rating system many tournaments use to sort players into divisions and to record results.

  • Create a free account at mydupr.com (it may redirect to dupr.com).
  • New players start as NR (Not Rated). Your rating builds as match results are submitted.
  • If an event is DUPR rated, your results may count towards your rating.
  • If an event is DUPR gated, your rating may decide which divisions you can enter.
  • Use the same name on DUPR that you use to register, so the organiser can find you.

Not rated yet? You may still have options, depending on the event. Our DUPR gating guide explains what to look for.

Pickleball Australia membership

Pickleball Australia (PA) is the national body for the sport. Events marked Sanctioned on Dinkcredible are run under PA's sanctioning program, which sets standards for things like officials, rules and equipment. (PA may use "Approved" wording in later regulations — our site label stays Sanctioned until we change it.)

For Sanctioned events:

  • Registration is through Pickleball Tournaments (formerly Pickleball Brackets).
  • You need a current PA membership, linked to your Pickleball Tournaments account and your DUPR account.
  • Allow time to set this up before entries close.
  • Sanctioned events require a paddle on the UPA-A or USA Pickleball approved lists. Check the event details if you're unsure about yours.

Independent events are run by clubs, venues or organisers outside that program. Check the organiser's page — some don't need PA membership.

Neither type is automatically better for a first tournament. Pick the one whose format, location and divisions suit you.

Partners and divisions

Choose a partner close to your level, and someone you'll enjoy spending a long day with. A friend from your regular club session is ideal.

When choosing a division:

  • Check the eligibility rules. Divisions may be set by DUPR range, skill description, age or gender. In gated doubles divisions, both players usually need to fit.
  • Be honest about your level. Entering well below your ability isn't fair on others. Entering well above it can make for a tough day. Aim for close matches.
  • No partner yet? On Pickleball Tournaments you can register needing a partner; ask the tournament director before close if you're still solo — matching isn't guaranteed. For other platforms, check the organiser's page.

Registration and fees

Once you've picked an event, follow the link from the Dinkcredible listing to the organiser's registration page. The "From $X per player" figure on our listing is a starting point. The organiser sets the actual fees, and extra events or add-ons may cost more.

Before you pay, check:

  • the entry fee and what it covers (for example, whether additional events cost extra)
  • when registration closes, and any withdrawal or refund policy
  • division eligibility, including any date when ratings are locked in
  • membership or account requirements (DUPR, PA, and — for Sanctioned events — Pickleball Tournaments)
  • start times, check-in details and the venue address

Popular events can fill and move to a waitlist, so it pays to register early once you've decided. If anything isn't clear, contact the organiser. Only they can confirm their own policies.

What to bring

Victorian weather can swing a lot in a single day, and tournament days are long. Pack for wherever you're playing.

Essentials

  • Paddle, plus a spare if you have one (for Sanctioned events, an approved paddle — see above)
  • Court shoes for the surface (indoor shoes for indoor courts, outdoor court shoes for hard courts)
  • A large water bottle, and more water than you think you'll need
  • Snacks and a proper lunch, since food options vary between venues
  • A charged phone for check-in and schedule updates

Outdoor events

  • SPF 50+ sunscreen, a hat or visor, and sunglasses
  • Layers for a cool morning that turns into a hot afternoon
  • A light rain jacket, just in case
  • A folding chair and some shade if you can bring it

Indoor events

  • A warm layer for between matches, since big halls can be cool in winter
  • Clean indoor shoes, which some venues require

Handy extras

  • Towel and a change of shirt
  • Tape, blister pads and any medication you need
  • Spare overgrip
  • A small bag for valuables

On the day

  • Arrive early. Leave time to park or get there by public transport, check in and warm up. Parking near popular venues can fill quickly on tournament weekends.
  • Know your schedule. Find your court, start time and how results are reported.
  • Stay close by. Matches can run ahead or behind, so keep an ear out for your names.
  • Keep it friendly. Introduce yourself, tap paddles and call lines fairly. Tournament crowds are usually welcoming to first-timers.
  • Enjoy it. Win or lose, you'll come away with plenty of games and probably a few new playing mates.
